The Pilates method is more than a class or a group of exercises, it’s a system that we want each student to experience in full. This is why our New Student Package includes a mix of private instruction (the very best and safest way to learn your way around the Pilates exercises and apparatus) and group mat-based classes. 

What’s included:

  • Three Introductory Private Sessions and

  • One-month of Unlimited Movement Principles & Mat Classes

(Package expires one (1) month after first use)

To be introduced you to the system of Pilates, including the principles of breath and movement, essential exercises, and the suite of apparatus (Reformer, Trapeze Table/Tower, Wunda Chair, Barrels, etc). 

To learn considerations specific to your body that will help you move safely and effectively though your sessions and classes at the studio (ie. how to modify for injuries or other physical conditions or which props or small equipment might make your practice more efficient).

What comes next?

When you’ve completed the New Student Package or a set of five (5) Intro to Group Studio classes, you’ll be ready to join our Group Studio classes and/or continue with personalized private instruction and/or get the most out of our Movement Principles and Mat classes.

What can I expect from classes and private sessions?

Instruction at Rooted Pilates integrates movement, breath, and awareness to develop a stronger, more flexible, and more balanced body. Each body is unique and we're all working towards achieving our own unique goals. Expect your teacher to encourage you to explore your individual movement, challenge yourself, and leave with some homework for your time away from the studio.

I’m brand new. Where do I start?

If you’re looking to join a group class, we recommend getting started with our Movement Principles class and/or Intro to Group Studio class where you’ll get a general introduction to the Pilates method and a good overview of the foundational movements and exercises. If you’re coming to Pilates during or after pregnancy, our Prenatal + Postpartum class is your best bet to get started safely.

For students starting Pilates post-injury or with a condition that may require special attention, or if you just want a personalized introduction, private instruction is always a great place to start. Request a session here.

What should I wear?

We'd suggest showing up in a t-shirt or tank with either yoga (ahem, Pilates) pants, long shorts, or joggers. You'll feel best if your clothes allow you to move freely, without them being too baggy. You'll leave your shoes on the tray or rack at the front of the studio and are welcome to wear socks or go barefoot.

What's transportation and parking like?

Our students walk, bike, and ride to the studio! We're located one block from the Potomac Ave and 5 blocks from the Eastern Market Metro stations on the Orange, Blue, and Silver lines. If you're driving, there is metered parking on Pennsylvania Ave and 2-hour non-resident parking in the surrounding neighborhood. 

What else should I bring?

We provide Pilates mats free of charge and filtered water. You are, of course, always welcomed to bring your own, but no need. You may also bring your completed new student form to your first session (downloadable below) or arrive a few minutes early to complete it in-studio.
